Overview

Lays up fibreglass, carbon fibre, or other composite materials in moulds and applies resin to produce reinforced plastic components. This role involves preparing moulds, precisely positioning materials, mixing and applying resins, curing components, and then trimming, sanding, and inspecting finished parts for defects to ensure they meet quality specifications.

Contributes to the production of lightweight, durable, and high-performance components critical for industries such as aerospace, automotive, marine, and construction, enabling advancements in product design and efficiency.

On the job

  • Prepare moulds by cleaning, applying release agents, and setting up tooling.
  • Cut and lay up composite materials (e.g., fibreglass, carbon fibre) into moulds according to specifications.
  • Mix and apply resins, ensuring proper saturation and removal of air bubbles.
  • Operate vacuum bagging equipment and ovens for curing composite parts.
  • Trim, sand, and finish cured components, ensuring smooth edges and adherence to dimensional tolerances.
  • Inspect finished parts for defects such as voids, delamination, or surface imperfections.
