Railway shunters are critical to the efficient operation of rail yards. They are responsible for coupling and uncoupling rolling stock, moving wagons and locomotives to assemble trains for departure, and performing various yard duties. This includes operating points (switches), communicating effectively with train drivers and signallers, and conducting thorough checks of wagons for defects or safety issues before dispatch. Their work ensures the safe and timely movement of rail freight and passenger services.

On the job
- Operate points and signals to guide rolling stock movements within the rail yard
- Couple and uncouple wagons and locomotives using manual and automated systems
- Communicate clearly and precisely with train drivers, signallers, and other yard personnel via radio or hand signals
- Inspect rolling stock for defects, damage, or improper loading before train departure
- Maintain accurate records of shunting movements, train compositions, and equipment status
