Overview
A Perfusionist is a highly specialized allied health professional responsible for operating heart-lung machines and other circulatory support devices during open-heart surgery and other medical procedures. They maintain blood flow and oxygenation, monitor patient vital signs continuously, and adjust machine parameters in real time to support the patient's physiological needs, ensuring patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes.
Ensures patient survival and well-being during complex surgical procedures by maintaining vital physiological functions when the heart and lungs are temporarily bypassed or compromised.
On the job
- Set up, prime, and operate heart-lung machines (cardiopulmonary bypass) during surgical procedures
- Administer blood products, medications, and anesthetic agents as directed by the surgical team
- Monitor and manage blood gas levels, electrolyte balance, blood pressure, and body temperature
- Maintain detailed records of patient parameters, equipment performance, and interventions
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff in a sterile environment
