On the job

  • Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures, including setting up sterile drapes, surgical instruments, and equipment.
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout the operation, monitoring for any breaks in aseptic technique.
  • Pass instruments, sponges, and other supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants during procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team to ensure instruments and supplies are available when required.
  • Account for all instruments, sponges, and sharps before, during, and after surgery to prevent retained foreign objects.
