Overview

A Lagger is a skilled tradesperson responsible for applying insulating materials to pipes, boilers, ductwork, and other industrial equipment. This critical work controls heat loss or gain, prevents condensation, reduces noise, and protects workers from extreme temperatures. Lagging ensures energy efficiency and safety in various industrial settings, including power plants, chemical facilities, and commercial buildings.

Contributes significantly to energy efficiency, operational safety, and environmental protection by preventing heat waste, maintaining process temperatures, and protecting personnel from hazardous surfaces.

On the job

  • Measure and cut insulating materials to fit pipes, ducts, tanks, and other equipment.
  • Apply various types of insulation, such as fiberglass, mineral wool, foam, or rigid boards, using adhesives, fasteners, and banding.
  • Install protective coverings like metal jacketing, canvas, or plastic sheeting over insulation to shield it from damage and weather.
  • Read blueprints, schematics, and work orders to determine insulation requirements and specifications.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, including working at heights, in confined spaces, and handling hazardous materials.
