Overview
Directs crane operators during lifts by using standardized hand signals and two-way radio communication. This role is critical for ensuring loads are balanced, safely guided into position, and that all personnel on worksites are protected from potential hazards. Doggers are responsible for assessing load weight, selecting appropriate rigging gear, and maintaining clear communication in dynamic and often challenging environments.
Ensures the safe and efficient movement of heavy materials and equipment on construction sites and other industrial settings, preventing accidents and costly damage, and maintaining project schedules.
On the job
- Interpret lift plans and assess site conditions to determine safe lifting procedures.
- Select, inspect, and attach appropriate rigging equipment (slings, shackles, hooks) to loads.
- Communicate precise hand signals and radio commands to crane operators for hoisting, lowering, and traversing loads.
- Monitor the stability and balance of loads during lifts, adjusting as necessary.
- Ensure the safety of all personnel in the vicinity of lifting operations.
